Martin Wolf on what should India do

On a day when India learnt that the Central Government challenged the order of the a bench of the Delhi High Court ordering proper pension payment to Mr. E. Sreedharan , it is good to read Martin Wolf’s piece in FT on what should India do to become affluent by 2039. It puts the progress India has achieved, in perspective. Although it lags behind China in some of these metrics, the progress is nothing to be scoffed at. Mr. Wolf is gentle on the Prime Minister:

I have been lucky to have known Dr Singh for three and a half decades. I admire nobody more. I only hope he is prepared to use his possibly final period in office boldly

But his hope is the key message there. We are hoping as well.

This is how he concludes the piece:

Within a decade a world in which the UK is on the United Nations Security Council and India is not will seem beyond laughable. The old order passes. The sooner the world adjusts, the better.

Of course,  he has penned this column upon visiting India in the last two weeks on the occasion of the release of a report on India in 2039. The link to the report is to be found in Mr. Wolf’s article. (I am not sure if this article is available only for FT subscribers. If so, pl. accept my apologies for the disappointment).

While you are on FT, you might wish to check out this news item on India launching a nuclear submarine by end-July.
